India is in a race with the USA and others to develop High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellite (HAPS)

New Space Research Technologies (NSRT)

NSRT, the blue-eyed boy among the Indian aerospace startups, has recently demonstrated 21 hours of non-stop flights of solar power-driven Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). With a wing span of 7.5 meters, this high-altitude vehicle is a technology demonstrator and can be used for high altitude long endurance missions.

NSRT’s upcoming flights

After the success of its first maiden flight of HAPS, the company’s next plan is to develop and fly a satellite with a wing span of 16 meters. Upon the success of this flight, their next move would be to fly a HAPS with a wing span of 24 meters. Their ultimate aim is to fly a HAPS with a wingspan of 59 meters for more than 60 hours in the stratosphere (65,000 feet above sea level). This flight will be a game-changer in aerial surveillance and communication.

Understanding High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS)

HAPS are unmanned aerial vehicles that operate at high altitudes, typically in the stratosphere, offering an extended and stable presence in the sky. These vehicles combine the advantages of satellites and traditional UAVs, providing a cost-effective and flexible alternative for various missions, including communication, surveillance, and environmental monitoring.

Key Features of India’s HAPS

Altitude and Endurance: India’s HAPS is designed to operate at altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet, well above the range of traditional UAVs. This high-altitude capability enables it to function for extended durations, making it an ideal platform for long-term missions.

Payload Capacity: The HAPS platform boasts a substantial payload capacity, allowing it to carry a variety of instruments and equipment. This versatility makes it suitable for various applications, from telecommunications relay to Earth observation.

Solar-Powered Operation: A distinguishing feature of India’s HAPS is its reliance on solar power for sustained operation. Solar panels integrated into the wings of the vehicle harness sunlight to generate the necessary power, ensuring continuous functionality even during extended missions.

Applications of HAPS Technology:

Communication Relay: HAPS can serve as a communication relay platform, especially in remote or disaster-stricken areas where traditional infrastructure may be unavailable. This capability is crucial for maintaining connectivity during emergencies.

Surveillance and Monitoring: The high-altitude vantage point of HAPS allows for effective surveillance and monitoring of large geographical areas. This is valuable for applications such as border security, environmental monitoring, and disaster management.

Scientific Research: HAPS platforms can facilitate scientific research by carrying specialized instruments for atmospheric studies, climate monitoring, and other scientific endeavors. The ability to remain airborne for extended periods enhances their data-gathering capabilities.

More information on Indian HAPS can be obtained from their Site
