On 18th December 2023, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) of Surat International Airport. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, Union Minister Smt Darshna Jardosh, and MP Shri C R Patil.
Boosting Surat’s Infrastructure
The new terminal, completed at a cost of Rs. 353 Crore, is a significant addition to Surat’s infrastructure. It caters to the dynamic city known for its flourishing textile industry and global recognition in diamond cutting and polishing.

Key Features of the NITB
The NITB spans 25,520 sqm and is designed to serve 1200 domestic and 600 international passengers during peak hours, with an annual capacity of 35 lakhs. Passenger comfort is prioritized with 20 check-in counters, five conveyor belts, and 500 car parking slots.
Future Expansion
The terminal is future-ready, with provisions to increase peak-hour capacity to 3000 passengers and an annual serving capacity of 55 lakhs. This expansion aligns with the city’s growth and increasing air travel demands.
PM’s Perspective
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the terminal’s role in enhancing travel experiences and driving economic growth, tourism, and connectivity in the region.

Enhanced Connectivity
Surat International Airport is now connected to more than 14 domestic cities and international destinations like Sharjah. The Union Cabinet declared Surat Airport as an International Airport on 15th December 2023.

As the gateway to Surat City, the terminal building is designed to reflect the local culture and heritage. The façade showcases the traditional woodwork of the ‘Rander’ region, enriching the passenger experience with a sense of place.
Economic Impact
The upgraded airport infrastructure is expected to unlock economic growth by attracting business investments and human capital. Improved air connectivity will stimulate tourism, business activities, education, and generate employment, crucial for the region’s economic prosperity.
