The American MNC Corning Glass, one of the key suppliers to Apple will invest Rs. 1000 Crore in a Gorilla glass-making facility. The facility will be set up at Pillaipakkam, near Sriperumbudur, on a 25-acre plot. The plant will employ around 300 people to begin with and it can be expanded if needed in the future. This marks the formal entry of another Apple supplier into India, bolstering the expanding ecosystem of Apple and electronic component manufacturers in the country.

Corning Glass’s upcoming Tamil Nadu facility

Tamil Nadu is making significant strides in electronic manufacturing with billions of USD investments to make mobile phones, laptops, and other consumer electronics. The government wants the economy of the state to reach USD 1 trillion by 2030. In this context, the addition of a new Corning glass facility to the long list of MNCs that made TN their home for manufacturing and R&D makes sense.

Corning chose Tamil Nadu for a reason

Corning did a thorough study on the cost-benefit factor of numerous manufacturing sites shown by various state governments. Later it zeroed in on TN which houses India’s largest Apple mobile phone-making facility. Being in the vicinity of the mother facility makes economic sense. Also, the workforce is exceptionally talented in the state, and added to that are the incentives offered by the TN government. All these factors attracted Corning’s investment in TN.

The investment will be officially announced during the global investor meeting (GIM) on 08/09 January 2024.

The government wants to make TN a part of the global supply chain

TN Industries Minister TRB Rajaa claims the government is diligently crafting an outstanding electronics ecosystem of international standards.

He later adds, “Our strategy involves moving up the electronics value chain by attracting specialized manufacturers who can cater to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Attracting these niche players is a crucial component of our targeted initiatives to position Tamil Nadu as a global leader in electronics manufacturing, contributing to India’s emergence as a prominent electronics hub.”
