Indigenous Compact Gas Turbines to Drive Indian Loitering Munition under Make in India

The Indian government will use locally developed Compact Gas Turbines (CGT) by private companies in its Defence-related Loitering munition program.

Loitering Munitions Programme (LMP)

Loitering Munitions (LM) are the new-age air weapons that countries worldwide are embracing in the fastest ways. India is no different, it has its own LMP using indigenously developed components without any foreign dependency.

What is Loitering Munition?

A loitering munition, alternatively referred to as a suicide drone, kamikaze drone, or exploding drone, represents an innovative class of aerial weaponry featuring an integrated munition (warhead). These drones possess the unique capability to loiter or wait passively, within a designated target area until a suitable target is identified. Upon detection, the loitering munition executes an attack by intentionally crashing into the target.

Advantages of Loitering Munitions are many

The distinct advantage of loitering munitions is their ability to significantly reduce reaction times against concealed targets that may emerge briefly. This is achieved without the necessity of deploying high-value platforms close to the target area, minimizing risk. Additionally, these munitions offer a heightened level of precision in targeting, as their trajectory can be altered or the attack can be aborted mid-flight, providing a more discerning and adaptable approach to engagements. This adaptability makes loitering munitions versatile and strategic in modern warfare scenarios.

India to involve the private sector to make CGT

India is involving private sector companies to develop compact gas turbines with a thrust capacity of up to 100 kilogram-force (KgF).  The engines that go into Loitering Munition will be single-shaft turbine jet engines that can lift, fly, and hit the target like a jumbo jet.

The conventional gas turbine developed by the Bengaluru-based Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) is large and can deliver 425 KgF thrust.  It’s because of the size, it is made for a different purpose. Compact Gas Turbines will be a perfect match since LMs – 1-ton subsonic cruise missiles require small turbines.

The Loitering Munition developed by the Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) is air-launched, jet-powered, and can descend at a speed of 0.7 Mach.  Upon development, the Loitering Munition will weigh 30 to 50 kilograms; hence, Compact Gas Turbines to power them (LMs) makes sense.

India made Loitering Munitions

India’s defense R&D institutes, corporates, and startups have jumped into the fray to design, develop, and make state-of-the-art Loitering Munitions in India itself. However, some components, like compact gas turbines, are being imported from foreign countries. The government has started to involve the Indian private sector in making Compact Gas Turbines that can power Loitering Munitions.

Conclusion

The Indian government’s proactive approach in seeking private sector support for the development of Compact gas turbines for its loitering ammunition program marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s defense capabilities. This collaborative effort not only accelerates technological innovation but also establishes a framework for effective public-private partnerships, setting a precedent for future advancements in defense technology. As India strives for self-reliance and strategic autonomy, partnerships like these demonstrate the importance of synergies between the government and the private sector in achieving shared national objectives.

Aerostrovilos Energy aims to become the Tesla of India in Micro gas Turbines

Aerostrovilos Energy is building India’s first indigenous Micro gas turbines for commercial use.

Aerostrovilos derives its name from two Greek words, symbolizing the fusion of “air” and a term akin to the description of a turbine, says Rohit Grover and Pradeep Thangappan – the company’s founders.

The visionaries, incubated at IIT Madras, are spearheading Aerostrovilos Energy.  The startup aspires to bring out India’s first indigenous micro gas turbines for commercial applications. Originally, the founders planned to bring the product by 2023 end. However, the complex nature of deep-science-based products takes time to deliver.  Added to that was the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought unparalleled chaos in the world. The subsequent challenges delayed their timeline by nearly three years.

Founders aim to make their startup “The Tesla of the East”.

In their pursuit, Grover and Thangappan draw inspiration from Elon Musk, particularly his adept handling of full-stack technology at Tesla. Despite setbacks, they remain resolute in their ambition, with Grover asserting, “We aim to be the Tesla of micro gas turbines.”

Their turbine burns gas like ICE* and drives vehicles like an EV** – the best of both.

  • * Internal combustion Engine (ICE)- Petrol/ Diesel engine
  • ** Electric Vehicle (EV)

Their inaugural small turbine is slated to be a 100 kW unit, designed with a compact footprint that seamlessly fits beneath the cabin of a truck. This innovative turbine serves the dual purpose of generating ample electricity to power the vehicle, combining the efficiency of a fossil fuel-burning gas turbine with an electric power train. The resultant synergy yields numerous benefits, including minimal emissions—especially promising as the industry looks toward a future fueled by hydrogen—and a significantly elevated power-to-weight ratio.

Their product uses Mind boggling engineering and technology to deliver results

Aerostrovilos distinguishes itself with proprietary combustion technology, a result of collaborative efforts with IIT Madras’s National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD). The patented technology not only sets their turbine apart but also ensures heightened efficiency through a sophisticated fuel and air mixing process for combustion and superior thermal management. Processes like “swirl mesh lean direct injection,” commonplace in aviation, find a pioneering application in the Indian automotive and power genset sectors, courtesy of Grover and Thangappan. Notably, they’ve introduced cost-effective materials, diverging from the aviation-grade materials prevalent in similar turbines. This versatile combustor can burn various fuels, ranging from diesel to hydrogen, further enhancing its adaptability and appeal.

Market size for Micro Gas Turbines

There is a market with a size of 5 billion USD in India and South East Asia remaining to be tapped.

Micro-gas Turbine in brief

A micro gas turbine (MGT) is a compact gas turbine with a 25 to 200-kilowatt range. It is similar to the heavy gas turbine, and what sets the micro turbine apart is its superior power-to-weight ratio.  The consequence of the reduced turbine diameters leads to an escalation in shaft rotational speed. Unlike their bulkier counterparts, heavy gas turbine generators, which are impractical for distributed power applications due to their size and cost, microturbines are purposefully engineered for small-scale power generation. They find applications, both independently for electrical power generation and as integral components in combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems. This adaptability positions microturbines as efficient and cost-effective solutions for diverse power needs.

The MGT is a 25 to 200-kilowatt gas turbine evolved from piston engine turbochargers, aircraft auxiliary power units (APU), or small jet engines, the size of a refrigerator.

In short

The Arostrovilos Energy Micro gas turbine (MGT) will run on gas – CNG OR Hydrogen and deliver 100 KW power output that is used to drive the EV motor.  In a way, MGT converts gas energy into electrical energy.

India is developing the Desi Internet of Things (IoT) stack to help SMEs

0

India is actively working on an Internet of Things platform (IoT) stack tailored for SMEs, offering them an affordable means to infuse intelligence into their products. This innovative stack will enable seamless communication and decision-making ability among various everyday devices that we use. This will transform the way we interact with and rely on the day-to-day equipment we use. The objective of the development of IoT under the public domain is to empower SMEs, allowing them to incorporate smart functionalities into their products without incurring significant expenses. This will foster a more interconnected and intelligent ecosystem.

Introduction to the Government owned Internet of Things platform

Following the success of digital public infrastructure (DPI) initiatives like Aadhaar, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and DigiLocker, the government is actively strategizing the development of a domestic Internet of Things platform (IoT) stack. This initiative, as outlined by officials, aims to leverage open-source tools and software to create a cost-effective and secure solution. The primary objective is to facilitate seamless integration for startups and small companies, enabling them to harness the interconnected technologies essential for device connectivity, data management, and storage.

The public IoT stack development is a well-thought-out initiative

The proposal for an indigenous IoT stack emerged during a recent collaborative meeting involving representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), and industry executives. Recognizing the escalating demand for an ecosystem supporting connected devices and secure data storage, there is a collective push for a comprehensive stack. This stack is envisioned to effortlessly harmonize various layers, encompassing hardware, software, communication, and cloud infrastructure—the foundational elements of any robust IoT system.

Significance of having native standards for the Internet of Things applications

Officials emphasize the significance of establishing native standards for the Internet of Things applications within the country. By doing so, India can cultivate homegrown technologies to create an inclusive data economy locally. This will liberate the industry from the constraints imposed by major technology corporations that currently dominate the IoT solutions landscape. This endeavor is seen as a strategic move to foster innovation, self-reliance, and a more diversified technological landscape, ultimately contributing to the nation’s digital sovereignty.

Interconnected devices using the Internet of Things platform stack

IoT, or the Internet of Things, refers to the interconnectedness of physical devices like home appliances, vehicles, wearables, and more, enabling them to connect to the Internet.

The functionality of these devices and their task execution rely on the Internet of Things platform stack (IoT), which encompasses various layers. Take, for example, an IoT device like a home appliance, which establishes its internet connection through telecom networks, Wi-Fi, etc. This device gathers data from its usage and communicates with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services via a communication protocol. The cloud platform is a repository, storing and transferring the collected data through cloud applications. These applications serve as interfaces for end-users to interact with the system, while companies gain insights through the customer interface.

The IoT stack being developed as an open architecture

Currently, feasibility studies are underway to develop essential tools for the following

  • Data management,
  • device connectivity,
  • Integration with third-party vendors,
  • Application programming interfaces (APIs).

These tools are intended to support startups and companies in creating a cost-effective IoT model. The objective is to enable smaller companies to reduce operational costs, fostering a more accessible and sustainable IoT landscape.

SMEs will find the IoT platform stack very cost-effective

Using publicly available IoT solutions, SMEs can save significant costs in finding, selecting, and integrating these IoT components. Further, a standardized framework will also help the companies do away with the need for different vendors when assembling solutions on a use-case-by-use-case basis.

Conclusion

The government’s proactive step towards developing a publicly accessible IoT framework and local standardization marks a significant stride in enhancing our digital interconnectedness. This initiative not only aligns with the broader vision of digital integration but also serves as a promising avenue for the general public. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in particular, stand to benefit from leveraging publicly available IoT Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to infuse intelligence into their products without incurring exorbitant costs.

The data generated from these smart devices will be securely stored on government-owned cloud storage, offering a centralized and reliable repository for messaging and further processing. This approach alleviates the financial burden on SMEs, sparing them from the need to invest extensively in building their own IoT framework. Instead, they can capitalize on the resources readily available in the public domain.

Drawing parallels to the success stories of UPI, Digilocker, Aadhar, and similar initiatives, the indigenous IoT framework is poised to emerge as another resounding.
