Indigenous Compact Gas Turbines to Drive Indian Loitering Munition under Make in India

India’s defense R&D institutes, corporates, and startups have jumped into the fray to design, develop, and make state-of-the-art Loitering Munitions in India itself.

The Indian government will use locally developed Compact Gas Turbines (CGT) by private companies in its Defence-related Loitering munition program.

Loitering Munitions Programme (LMP)

Loitering Munitions (LM) are the new-age air weapons that countries worldwide are embracing in the fastest ways. India is no different, it has its own LMP using indigenously developed components without any foreign dependency.

What is Loitering Munition?

A loitering munition, alternatively referred to as a suicide drone, kamikaze drone, or exploding drone, represents an innovative class of aerial weaponry featuring an integrated munition (warhead). These drones possess the unique capability to loiter or wait passively, within a designated target area until a suitable target is identified. Upon detection, the loitering munition executes an attack by intentionally crashing into the target.

Advantages of Loitering Munitions are many

The distinct advantage of loitering munitions is their ability to significantly reduce reaction times against concealed targets that may emerge briefly. This is achieved without the necessity of deploying high-value platforms close to the target area, minimizing risk. Additionally, these munitions offer a heightened level of precision in targeting, as their trajectory can be altered or the attack can be aborted mid-flight, providing a more discerning and adaptable approach to engagements. This adaptability makes loitering munitions versatile and strategic in modern warfare scenarios.

India to involve the private sector to make CGT

India is involving private sector companies to develop compact gas turbines with a thrust capacity of up to 100 kilogram-force (KgF).  The engines that go into Loitering Munition will be single-shaft turbine jet engines that can lift, fly, and hit the target like a jumbo jet.

The conventional gas turbine developed by the Bengaluru-based Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) is large and can deliver 425 KgF thrust.  It’s because of the size, it is made for a different purpose. Compact Gas Turbines will be a perfect match since LMs – 1-ton subsonic cruise missiles require small turbines.

The Loitering Munition developed by the Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) is air-launched, jet-powered, and can descend at a speed of 0.7 Mach.  Upon development, the Loitering Munition will weigh 30 to 50 kilograms; hence, Compact Gas Turbines to power them (LMs) makes sense.

India made Loitering Munitions

India’s defense R&D institutes, corporates, and startups have jumped into the fray to design, develop, and make state-of-the-art Loitering Munitions in India itself. However, some components, like compact gas turbines, are being imported from foreign countries. The government has started to involve the Indian private sector in making Compact Gas Turbines that can power Loitering Munitions.

Conclusion

The Indian government’s proactive approach in seeking private sector support for the development of Compact gas turbines for its loitering ammunition program marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s defense capabilities. This collaborative effort not only accelerates technological innovation but also establishes a framework for effective public-private partnerships, setting a precedent for future advancements in defense technology. As India strives for self-reliance and strategic autonomy, partnerships like these demonstrate the importance of synergies between the government and the private sector in achieving shared national objectives.
