Cairn Oil & Gas Implements India’s Largest Commercial ASP Flooding in High Viscosity Mangala Oil Field

0

New Delhi, June 12, 2024: Cairn Oil & Gas, India’s premier private oil and gas exploration company under the Vedanta Group, has achieved a significant milestone by implementing Alkaline Surfactant Polymer (ASP) flooding in the Mangala oil field located in Barmer, Rajasthan. This operation represents the largest commercial ASP injection in India and is among the few of such magnitude executed globally. This groundbreaking initiative underscores Cairn’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance oil recovery from mature fields and accelerate future field developments.

Overview of ASP Flooding Technology

Alkaline Surfactant Polymer (ASP) flooding is an innovative Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technique that involves injecting a mixture of alkaline chemicals, surfactants, and polymers into mature oil fields. This method is designed to significantly increase oil recovery rates:

  • Increased Recovery Efficiency: Traditional polymer flooding alone typically achieves a recovery rate of around 40%. However, by incorporating surfactants, ASP flooding can boost recovery rates up to 60%. Surfactants help to reduce the interfacial tension between oil and water, making it easier for the oil to flow through the reservoir and be extracted.
  • Targeted Implementation: The ASP flooding has been successfully implemented at the MWP-1 and MWP-19 project sites within the Mangala field. This is expected to yield an additional 20% oil recovery in the targeted area, enhancing the overall output from this mature field.

Cairn’s Technological Innovation and Expansion Plans

Cairn Oil & Gas has a longstanding tradition of pioneering technological advancements in India’s oil and gas sector. The company’s flagship Mangala, Bhagyam, and Aishwariya (MBA) fields in Barmer have been the sites of numerous innovative projects. The successful ASP flood pilot conducted earlier paved the way for the submission and approval of a comprehensive Field Development Plan (FDP). Building on this success, Cairn plans to expand ASP flooding technology to other fields within the Rajasthan block.

Dr. Steve Moore, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Cairn Oil & Gas, emphasized the importance of this achievement: “In line with our commitment to boost India’s domestic oil & gas production, we are proud to pioneer the implementation of ASP flooding technology in our flagship Mangala oil field. This innovation is a testament to our commitment to maximizing recovery from mature fields, using advanced technologies. This is a big milestone for us and our JV partner, keeping Cairn at the leading edge of technology application worldwide.”

Implications for India’s Hydrocarbon Industry

The commercial deployment of ASP flooding by Cairn Oil & Gas marks a pioneering achievement in India’s hydrocarbon industry. By implementing such advanced technologies, Cairn is not only enhancing the recovery rates of existing oil fields but also supporting India’s broader goal of transitioning towards energy self-sufficiency. The ability to increase domestic oil production reduces the country’s reliance on imports, thereby enhancing energy security.

About Cairn Oil & Gas

Cairn Oil & Gas, a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited, is the largest private oil and gas exploration and production company in India. It contributes approximately 25% of the country’s domestic crude oil production. Cairn operates with a world-class resource base and has interests in 62 blocks across India, covering over 60,000 square kilometers. The company boasts gross Proved Plus Probable Reserves (2P) and Contingent Reserves (2C) of 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe).

Udupi, Karnataka – May 31st, 2024: Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has secured an important contract for the construction of three 70-tonne Bollard Pull Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) Tugs. These orders come from Ocean Sparkle Limited (OSL), an Adani Harbor Services Limited company, and represent a continuation of the successful partnership between UCSL and OSL.

The contract was officially signed by Shri Harikumar A, CEO of UCSL, and Shri Hiren Shah, MD and CEO of OSL. This follows a previous contract in which UCSL constructed and delivered two 62-tonne bollard pull ASD tugs for OSL ahead of schedule. These tugs are currently operational at Paradeep Port and New Mangalore Port.

The newly ordered 70-tonne bollard pull tugs will feature a length of 33 meters, a beam of 12.2 meters, and a draft of 4.2 meters. They will be equipped with two main engines producing 1838 kW each, thrusters with a diameter of 2.7 meters, diesel generators of 150 kW, a forward towing winch, an aft winch, a deck crane with a 3-tonne capacity, and an external fire-fighting system (FIFI-1) capable of pumping 2800 cubic meters per hour. These tugs will be built under the Indian Flag and classed with the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), conforming to the Approved Standard Tug Design and Specifications (ASTDS) set by the Government of India, in line with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. UCSL is the first shipyard to contract and construct tugs that meet these specifications.

UCSL has made significant strides since its revival following CSL’s takeover in September 2020. The shipyard’s order book includes six 3800-deadweight dry cargo vessels for Wilson ASA, Norway. This rapid progress highlights UCSL’s commitment to high-quality construction and timely delivery.

Now Identify Spam Calls, DoT Introduces 160xxxxxxx Number Series to Curb Unsolicited Telemarketing Calls

0

New Delhi, May 30, 2024: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a new numbering series, 160xxxxxxx, specifically for service and transactional calls. This initiative aims to help consumers easily identify legitimate calls and curb the increasing issue of unsolicited calls from telemarketers using regular 10-digit mobile numbers.

Addressing the Problem

Previously, the 140xxxxxxx series was allocated for promotional, service, and transactional calls. However, due to its extensive use for promotional calls, consumers often ignore calls from this series, leading to missed important service and transactional communications. To avoid this, genuine entities started using regular 10-digit numbers, creating an opportunity for fraudsters to deceive consumers.

Introducing the 160xxxxxxx Series

To solve this problem and restore consumer confidence, the DoT has introduced the 160xxxxxxx number series. This series will be exclusively used by legitimate entities for making service and transactional calls. For instance, calls from financial entities like RBI, SEBI, PFRDA, and IRDA will now start from 1601, making it easier for consumers to recognize and trust these calls.

Verification and Regulation

Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) are responsible for verifying entities before assigning a number from the 160 series. Entities must commit to using these numbers solely for service and transactional calls, in accordance with the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR), 2018.

Enhancing Consumer Protection

Consumers can now have more confidence in the legitimacy of calls from the 160xxxxxxx series, thereby reducing the risk of falling victim to scams. The DoT also advises citizens to report any suspected fraudulent communications through the Chakshu facility at Sanchar Saathi (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in).

Furthermore, the DoT encourages consumers to activate the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) Do Not Disturb (DND) feature to block unwanted promotional calls, providing an additional layer of protection against spam.

Detailed Definitions

  • Service Call: A voice call made with the recipient’s consent or using a registered template, primarily to facilitate, complete, or confirm a commercial transaction the recipient has previously agreed to or to provide warranty, product recall, safety, or security information about a product or service used by the recipient.
  • Transactional Call: A non-promotional voice call for the purpose of alerting customers or account holders with time-critical information.
  • Promotional Call: A commercial communication voice call made without the recipient’s explicit consent.

Further Information

For more details on the new numbering scheme, visit DoT’s Allocation of Separate Numbering Series for Service and Transactional Voice Calls.

This new initiative by the DoT is a significant step towards enhancing communication transparency and consumer protection in India’s telecommunication landscape.
