Mumbai, India – May 31, 2024: The steel-cutting ceremony for the first of six Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) was held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, attended by officials from the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). This ceremony marks a significant step in the project initiated by the Ministry of Defence, which signed a contract with MDL in December 2023 for the procurement of these advanced vessels at a total cost of Rs 1,614.89 crore.
The NGOPV project aims to significantly enhance the ICG’s capabilities in coastal and offshore patrol duties, safeguarding maritime zones, and improving operational efficiency. These vessels are designed with cutting-edge technology and equipment to meet the evolving demands of maritime security.
Each NGOPV will be powered by two diesel engines, capable of achieving a maximum continuous speed of 23 knots and covering a distance of up to 5,000 nautical miles. The vessels are equipped with facilities for integral twin-engine helicopters and can stage heavy helicopters, thus enhancing aerial surveillance and response capabilities.
Additional advanced features of the NGOPVs include multipurpose drones, artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, and wirelessly controlled remote water rescue craft. These state-of-the-art technologies provide the ICG with increased flexibility and operational edge in various maritime scenarios.
The first NGOPV is scheduled for delivery by May 2027. This project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the ICG, MDL, and other stakeholders, underscoring India’s commitment to self-reliance and indigenous manufacturing in the defense sector. The NGOPV project not only boosts the operational capabilities of the ICG but also aligns with the nation’s strategic vision of enhancing maritime security and fostering domestic shipbuilding expertise.
The ceremony was a significant event, highlighting the progress and dedication of all parties involved in this critical national project.
