Bengaluru, India – June 5, 2024 – On this World Environment Day, Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has introduced a new fleet of electric vehicle (EV) taxis, marking a significant step in its sustainability journey.
This initiative, in collaboration with Refex eVeelz, aims to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a cleaner environment.
A Greener Fleet
The new EV fleet consists of 175 compact SUVs, replacing traditional fuel-based taxis. With over 50% of the airport’s taxi fleet now electric, Bengaluru Airport aims to significantly cut down on carbon emissions.
This move not only benefits the airport’s immediate surroundings but also contributes to broader environmental goals.
Commitment to Sustainability
In addition to introducing the EV taxis, BLR Airport celebrated World Environment Day by planting 100 trees on its campus. This effort underscores the airport’s dedication to creating green spaces and nurturing the environment.
Hari Marar, Managing Director & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Ltd, stated, “At BIAL, our commitment to sustainability drives us to implement initiatives that benefit the environment.
The EV taxi fleet and tree planting drive are steps towards reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing green spaces within our airport. These initiatives positively impact the ecosystem and improve the overall experience for our passengers and the local community.”
Enhanced Passenger Safety and Convenience
The new EV taxis can be booked conveniently at the airport taxi stands or through the BLR Pulse mobile app. The redesigned taxis come in two colors: teal, representing sustainability, and pink, designated for female passengers and driven by female drivers.
This not only promotes safety and inclusivity but also provides a secure and comfortable travel option for all passengers. Each passenger receives a complimentary “Pink Card” with emergency contact numbers, enhancing safety measures further.
A Broader Vision for Sustainability
BIAL’s long-term vision includes transitioning all airport vehicles to sustainable options. The airport has already implemented semi-robotic aircraft towing vehicles and EVs on both airside and landside. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to environmental stewardship, prioritizing passenger well-being and fostering a greener future.
Anil Jain, Managing Director of Refex Group, added, “Refex’s Green Mobility vertical aims to provide reliable, safe, and cleaner commute options through Refex eVeelz. Our 100% company-owned and leased EV fleet, along with our driver partners and processes, offers an eco-friendly commuting experience.”
BLR Airport’s initiatives reflect a strong dedication to sustainability, positively impacting the environment and enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
