GE Aerospace’s GEnx Engine Reaches 2 Million Flight Hours Milestone in South Asia

0

GE Aerospace today announced a major achievement. Its GEnx engine family surpassed two million flight hours with South Asian airlines. The GEnx engines were first introduced in the region in 2012. They now power 90 aircraft in fleets belonging to Air India, Vistara, and Biman Bangladesh.

A Testament to Engineering Excellence

Mahendra Nair visited New Delhi. He is the Group Vice President for Commercial Programs at GE Aerospace. He expressed pride in the milestone. “The GEnx engine has been instrumental in supporting South Asia’s aviation growth. This milestone is a testament to its engineering excellence and technology maturity,” Nair stated.

GE Aerospace’s relationship with South Asian airlines has grown significantly. Vikram Rai, South Asia Chief Executive Officer for GE Aerospace, highlighted the importance of the partnership. He emphasized the significance particularly with Air India as the airline expands operations. Air India plans to add 20 new wide-body aircraft powered by 40 GEnx engines.

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, added, “GE Aerospace has been a trusted partner in our journey towards expanding our wide-body operations, and the GEnx engine has consistently delivered in terms of reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.”

Reliable & Sustainable Technology

The GEnx engine is widely recognized for powering Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and 747-8 aircraft. This marks a significant advancement in propulsion technology. With a focus on sustainability, the GEnx engine is 15% more fuel-efficient. It emits 15% less CO2 compared to its predecessor, the CF6 engine. Its design includes the twin-annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor. This feature also helps reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 60% below regulatory limits.

In South Asia, GE Aerospace’s researchers at the Bengaluru technology center have worked closely with airlines to enhance engine performance. They have deployed on-wing technologies like foam wash and advanced blade inspection to increase engine durability. These technologies also reduce maintenance burdens.

A notable achievement came in March 2023. Vistara’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, powered by GEnx engines, flew from Charleston, South Carolina, to New Delhi. This flight used a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blend. This flight demonstrated the engine’s capability to support environmentally friendly aviation.

Innovative Cleaning & AI-Driven Maintenance

GE Aerospace is continually improving the GEnx engine’s efficiency with innovations like the 360 Foam Wash. This advanced cleaning method has replaced traditional water washing in seven major airlines, including Air India, Emirates, and Qatar Airways. The process enhances fuel efficiency and extends time between maintenance cycles, further reducing operational costs and environmental impact.

In addition to cleaning innovations, GE Aerospace has leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to improve maintenance services. The company’s AI-enabled Blade Inspection Tool (BIT) uses predictive analytics to increase the accuracy and speed of inspections. By guiding technicians to key areas for turbine blade inspection, the tool reduces turnaround time and ensures consistent, high-quality service.

GE Aerospace’s Commitment to India

GE Aerospace’s footprint in India has expanded over the past four decades. Thirteen hundred GE engines and partner engines power India’s major airlines. The company supports India’s defense sector by powering the Indian Airforce’s Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk 1. It also powers Indian Navy battleships. GE Aerospace’s manufacturing facility in Pune and partnerships with 13 local companies contribute to its global supply chain. At the John F Welch Technology Center in Bengaluru, researchers are developing cutting-edge aviation technologies.

The aviation industry continues to focus on sustainability and efficiency. GE Aerospace‘s GEnx engine family remains a critical component in driving progress. It also supports South Asia’s growing aviation market.

Understanding Criticality in Nuclear Power

On September 19, 2024, India took a significant step toward its energy goals. Unit-7 of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP-7) reached criticality. This milestone marks the start of a controlled nuclear fission reaction, essential for power generation.

Criticality occurs when the number of neutrons produced equals those lost, ensuring a stable power output. This transition moves the reactor from construction to operation, laying the foundation for electricity generation.

About RAPP-7

Located in Rawatbhata, Rajasthan, RAPP-7 is a 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR). It is part of a series of indigenous reactors showcasing India’s nuclear expertise.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) operates RAPP-7. It has a total planned capacity of 1400 MW for Units 7 and 8. Following successful operations at Kakrapar Atomic Power Station, RAPP-7 is set to enhance the country’s energy supply later this year.

Next Steps for RAPP-7

After reaching criticality, further tests will ensure RAPP-7 functions optimally before connecting to the national grid.

Power levels will gradually increase, with the reactor expected to generate full power soon. RAPP-7 will contribute significantly to India’s clean energy production, reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

Moving Towards Clean Energy

India is committed to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030, and nuclear energy plays a key role. With zero emissions, nuclear power helps the nation meet energy needs while addressing climate concerns. The progress of RAPP-7 is another step toward a cleaner, sustainable future for India.

The criticality of RAPP-7 signifies not only operational readiness but also India’s advancements in nuclear technology. This achievement strengthens the country’s energy security and highlights its commitment to reducing carbon emissions while meeting growing energy demands.
