PM Unveils Transformative Infra Projects Worth Over 4,000 Crores in Kochi, Kerala

Inauguration of Key Projects

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated three major infrastructure projects, collectively valued at over Rs. 4,000 crores, in Kochi, Kerala. The projects inaugurated include the New Dry Dock (NDD) at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) of CSL, and the LPG Import Terminal of Indian Oil Corporation Limited at Puthuvypeen, Kochi.

Transforming Maritime Strength

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi emphasized India’s focus on enhancing maritime strength as the nation emerges as a key global trade center. He highlighted reforms over the past decade to improve the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in ports, shipping, and inland waterways.

Strategic Importance of New Dry Dock

The New Dry Dock, built at a cost of approximately Rs. 1,800 crores, stands as a flagship project showcasing India’s engineering prowess. With a length of 310 meters, width of 75/60 meters, and a draught of up to 9.5 meters, it is one of the largest marine infrastructures in the region. The dock’s heavy ground loading enables handling of strategic assets, eliminating India’s reliance on foreign nations for emergency national requirements.

International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF)

Costing about Rs. 970 crores, the ISRF project features a ship lift system with a 6000T capacity, six workstations, and a berth of approximately 1,400 meters. It will modernize and expand CSL’s ship repair capabilities, positioning Kochi as a global ship repair hub.

LPG Import Terminal Enhancing Energy Infrastructure

Indian Oil’s LPG Import Terminal at Puthuvypeen, Kochi, Kerala, built at a cost of Rs. 1,236 crores, boasts state-of-the-art facilities. With a 15,400 MT storage capacity, it ensures a steady supply of LPG for households and businesses in the region, contributing to India’s efforts for accessible and affordable energy.

PM Modi’s Vision for Development

PM Modi emphasized the role of these projects in transforming India’s ports, shipping, and waterways sector. He praised Kochi Shipyard for its contribution to modern and green water connectivity, noting its role in projects such as the ‘Make in India’ aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

Boost to Economy and Employment

These infrastructure projects are expected to boost the nation’s shipbuilding and repair capacities, energy infrastructure, and ancillary industries. They will contribute to EXIM Trade, reduce logistics costs, drive economic growth, build self-reliance, and create numerous domestic and international business opportunities.

Conclusion and Acknowledgements

PM Modi concluded by expressing gratitude for the rapid development of Kerala and congratulated the citizens for these transformative infrastructure projects. The Governor of Kerala, Shri Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal were also present at the inauguration ceremony. The projects mark a significant milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a developed maritime nation.
