South Western Railway (SWR) has reported remarkable financial growth in the first seven months of 2023. The railway zone’s earnings have surged significantly, as indicated by the latest financial data.
Gross Revenue Soars
During the period from April to October 2023, SWR generated a Gross Revenue (Apportioned) of Rs. 4288.27 crore, representing an impressive 10.44% increase when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, which saw revenues of Rs. 3882.93 crore.

Originating Passenger Revenue Jumps
SWR also achieved substantial growth in its Originating Passenger revenue, which reached Rs. 1801.68 crore during the first seven months of 2023. This marks a substantial 15.20% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, when revenues were at Rs. 1563.97 crore.
Freight Revenue on the Rise
The railway zone’s performance in freight revenue has also been exceptional. SWR earned an originating freight revenue of Rs. 2741.40 crore, showing a remarkable 11.66% increase. This growth was fueled by the loading of 27.49 million metric tons (MT) of freight during the same April to October 2023 period, compared to Rs. 2455.14 crore in revenue during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Factors Contributing to Growth
This impressive growth in freight earnings can be attributed to several key factors. SWR’s Business Development Units in its Divisions played a crucial role by executing extensive marketing initiatives. The Operations and Maintenance staff also made significant efforts to ensure timely supply of wagons and enhance asset reliability. Furthermore, the ongoing work on the doubling and electrification of SWR routes has led to reduced transit times for goods trains, thus improving mobility and reliability.
