NLCIL Awarded Contract of 2400 MW Thermal Power Project in Odisha to BHEL

EPC Contract Granted for State-of-the-Art Thermal Power Project in Jharsuguda District

In a recent development, NLC India Ltd, a Navratna Company under the Ministry of Coal, has awarded the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for the establishment of a Pit Head Green Field Thermal Power Project.

The project boasts a substantial capacity of 2,400 MW (3 x 800 MW – Stage I) and is set to be located in Jharsuguda District, Odisha. This significant milestone comes after a thorough competitive tender process under the International Competitive Bidding (ICB) route.

Ultra Super Critical Technology to Drive Environmental Sustainability

The forthcoming project will leverage Ultra Super Critical Technology, aligning with the latest advancements in environmentally friendly power generation. The entire power output of 2400 MW is earmarked for the states of Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Kerala, and Puducherry. Pertinently, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for this allocation have already been executed.

Comprehensive Scope of Contract Encompassing Cutting-Edge Equipment

BHEL’s role in the project spans engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, and commissioning of crucial equipment. This includes boilers, turbines, generators, balance of plants, Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD), and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for the 3 X800 MW – 2400 MW Stage –I.

Strategic Coal Linkage and Water Supply

Securing a coal linkage from the Talabira II & III mines of NLCIL, operational since 2020 in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur Districts of Odisha, the project also ensures a steady water supply from the Hirakud Reservoir.

The generated power will be efficiently evacuated through the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) and State Transmission Utility (STU) Network.

Adherence to Environmental Guidelines

In line with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) guidelines, the project incorporates advanced pollution control measures such as FGD and SCR. The boilers are intricately designed to facilitate co-firing of biomass, contributing to a greener initiative in accordance with Ministry of Power guidelines.

Projected Timeline and Cost Competitiveness

The first unit of the Thermal Power Project is slated for commissioning during the financial year 2028-29. Leveraging its status as a Pit Head Thermal Project, NLC India anticipates a competitive variable cost, thus ensuring the generation and provision of low-cost power to the designated beneficiaries.
