Overview
Karnataka has marked a notable milestone with 85.11% of its railway routes electrified as of December 31, 2023. The South Western Railway(SWR), serving the state, stands at an impressive 85% electrification rate.
National Electrification Status
The Indian Railways reports a nationwide electrification rate of 93.83% as of December 31, 2023. The electrified broad gauge (BG) route spans 61,508 RKM (Route Kilometers), with 4,048 RKM currently undergoing electrification.

State-Wise Achievements
Karnataka secures the 25th position among states with its 85.11% electrified network. Other top-performing states include Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, each boasting 100% electrification.

Zone-Wise Progress
Among railway zones, South Western Railway stands at 85%, contributing to the overall success. Leading zones with 100% electrification include NCR, ECOR, NER, WCR, CR, ER, KRCL, Metro, SECR, and SER.

Pending Electrification in Karnataka
While Karnataka celebrates its achievement, some routes still await electrification, including Vyasa Colony – Amaravathi Colony, Taj Sultanpur – Khanapur, Hole Narasipur – Hassan, Sakaleshpur – Kabaka Puttur, Suldhal – Ghataprabha, Kudachi – Miraj, and Wandal – Bagalkot. The Mysuru – Chamarajanagar line is nearly complete, with only a 900-meter stretch pending due to a pending NOC from AAI for OHE installation near Mysuru Airport.

Budget and Future Plans
The Budget Outlay for Railway Electrification in 2023-24 is set at 8,070 Crores, reflecting the commitment to further enhancing the electrification infrastructure.
