Driverless Metro Train by BEML Flagged Off

Bengaluru, July 15, 2024 – The Hon. Raksha Rajya Mantri, Shri Sanjay Seth, inaugurated a driverless MRS-1 Metro trainset at BEML’s Bengaluru plant. This marks a significant achievement for BEML’s Rail business division.

The new trainset is the 55th one supplied to the Mumbai Metro Rail Metropolitan Authority, designed for operations on Line 2 and Line 7.

Major Contract Win

BEML secured a major order amidst stiff global competition for designing, manufacturing, supplying, testing, commissioning, and training 96 trainsets of standard gauge Metro cars. The order, valued at approximately INR 4319 crores, highlights BEML’s competitive edge and capabilities.

Promoting Indigenous Development

During the ceremony, Shri Sanjay Seth emphasized the importance of indigenously developed metro systems for urban mobility. “BEML’s contribution to the ‘Make in India’ initiative is commendable.

The driverless metro trainset symbolizes our nation’s growing capabilities in manufacturing advanced transportation solutions,” he stated.

Pioneering Driverless Technology

BEML is the first Indian manufacturer to design, develop, and supply driverless trains. These state-of-the-art trains for Mumbai Metro Lines 2 and 7 are optimized for passenger comfort, safety, and energy efficiency, meeting stringent global standards.

The 6-car trainset can carry about 2,306 passengers, with seating for 298.
