India’s first indigenously-made 1500 HP engine for Main Battle Tanks test fired at BEML in Mysuru

Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane has lauded the inaugural test-firing of India’s first indigenously-developed 1500 Horsepower (HP) engine for Main Battle Tanks as a transformative moment that will significantly bolster India’s military capabilities. The event, held at BEML’s Engine division in the Mysuru complex on March 20, 2024, marks a pivotal milestone in the nation’s defence capabilities, showcasing India’s technological expertise and steadfast commitment to self-reliance in defence technologies.

The cutting-edge 1500 HP engine represents a paradigm shift in military propulsion systems, boasting advanced features such as a high power-to-weight ratio and operability in extreme conditions, including high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures, and desert environments. With its sophisticated technologies, the engine stands on par with the most advanced engines globally.

In his address during the inauguration of the Test Cell, Defence Secretary Aramane emphasized the significance of this achievement, highlighting its potential to enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces. Shantanu Roy, CMD of BEML, echoed this sentiment, affirming that the accomplishment cements BEML’s pivotal role as a key contributor to defence production in the country, underscoring its dedication to meeting the nation’s requirements in this critical sector.

The successful test-firing of the 1500 HP engine marks the culmination of Generation One, focused on technology stabilization. Generation Two will witness BEML producing engines for various trials at the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, a DRDO laboratory, followed by their integration into actual vehicles for user testing. The project, initiated in August 2020, is meticulously structured into five major milestones, ensuring timely completion and adherence to stringent quality standards, with a projected completion date set for mid-2025.

In addition to inaugurating the Test Cell, Defence Secretary Aramane unveiled the ‘Wall of Fame’ to honor the exceptional contributions of the BEML team. This symbolic gesture recognizes their tireless efforts in advancing the defence capabilities of the nation and achieving significant milestones in indigenous technological innovation. The event witnessed the presence of senior civil and military officials from the Ministry of Defence, industry partners, and officials of BEML Ltd, further highlighting the significance of this momentous occasion.
