Chennai, October 10, 2023 – The Southern Railway(SR) is on track to transform Chennai Egmore Station into a world-class transportation hub with its redevelopment project.
With redevelopment work that began in October 2022, the project aims to provide passengers with futuristic infrastructure and airport-like facilities.
As of now, four out of thirteen sub-projects have started, with the rest set to begin soon.

Scope of Chennai Egmore Redevelopment
The Chennai Egmore Station redevelopment project encompasses a diverse range of sub-projects. These ambitious developments are designed to create a seamless and modern travel experience.

- Station Buildings
- Multi-level Car Parking
- Commercial space oÂn Gandhi-Irwin side
- Commercial space oÂn Poonamallee side
- New Parcel Office
- 72m wide Departure concourse
- 36m wide Arrival concourse cum through passage
- 12m wide Arrival Foot Over Bridge
- Through roof over the Platforms
- 6m wide Foot Over Bridge for handling Parcels
- New electrical substation
- Construction of new railway quarters
- External engineering redevelopment works
Recent Achievements
Significant progress has already been made. Essential utilities that fell within the proposed station boundary have been relocated efficiently, without disrupting train operations. This includes the critical telecom system, ensuring uninterrupted train services. Furthermore, the shifting of facilities like the Permanent Way depot, S&T Depot and Running room has been completed.

Ongoing Works
Several projects are currently underway
- The construction of multi-level car parking and commercial spaces on both the Gandhi-Irwin and Poonamallee sides, as well as the parcel office, is in full swing.
- Notably, 338 piles have been cast for the multi-level car parking on the Gandhi-Irwin side.
- The development on the Poonamallee side is also progressing rapidly.
Support from State Authorities and Civic Bodies
The redevelopment project has received immense support and collaboration from various government bodies. Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has been working closely to design buildings around Egmore Metro stations. This collaborative effort promises an integrated multi-modal transportation system for the people of Chennai.
Support has also come from entities like the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board, TANGEDCO, GCC, CMDA, MTC, Highway department, Green Committee, Heritage committee, TNPCB, and more. These organizations have been instrumental in providing approvals and technical support to ensure the timely progress of this ambitious project.
Future Developments
Other works to commence soon
In the near future, construction of foot over bridges for parcels and arrival passengers will commence. These bridges will be equipped with lifts and escalators, enhancing accessibility for all travelers.

A World-Class Experience Awaits
The Chennai Egmore Railway Station redevelopment project, awarded to M/s DEC Infrastructure and Projects India Private Limited, Hyderabad, is estimated to cost Rs.734.91 Crores. Additionally, M/s Tata Consulting Engineers Limited, Mumbai, will oversee Project Management Services (PMS) at a cost of Rs.14.56 Crore.
The two proposed terminals, one on Gandhi Irwin Road Side and one on Poonamallee High Road side, will offer a G+3 structure with top-tier amenities. These include waiting lounges, ticketing areas, commercial spaces, and roof plazas. Departing and arriving passengers will be segregated, and the stations will feature parcel foot over bridges, lifts, and escalators. Multi-level car parking on both sides will provide ample parking space and budgetary hotels.
With the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore, passengers and rail users can expect an experience on par with international standards, marking a significant leap in the city’s transportation infrastructure.
