PM Unveils Major Railway Projects in Tamil Nadu

Prime Minister unveiled five railway projects worth Rs.3000 Crore in Tamil Nadu

Shri Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, visited Trichy in Tamil Nadu  January 2, 2024 and revealed a series of significant railway projects of Southern Railway (SR) aimed at boosting connectivity and economic development in the state.

The projects, totaling Rs. 2917 Crores, are part of a larger Rs. 20,000 Crore initiative covering rail, road, highways, shipping, and gas sectors to benefit Tamil Nadu.

Dedication of Doubling Projects

The Prime Minister dedicated two crucial railway doubling projects that promise to enhance transport capacity in Tamil Nadu.

1. Salem–Magnesite Jn–Omalur–Mettur Dam Doubling (41.4 Km)

Commissioned at a cost of Rs. 448 Crore, this project will significantly ease the movement of coal for Mettur Thermal Power Station and improve transportation for industries in the Mettur region. The increased speed of goods trains is expected to boost revenue for the railways.

2. Madurai – Tuticorin Doubling (160 Km)

Completed at a cost of Rs. 1890 Crore, this doubling project aims to enhance railway line capacity and facilitate more train services for the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu. It will play a pivotal role in the transportation of coal, fertilizers, and other industrial products to and from the port of Tuticorin.

Inauguration of Electrification Projects

The Hon’ble PM also inaugurated three electrification projects, contributing to eco-friendly transportation and net-zero carbon emissions.

1. Tiruchchirappalli- Manamadurai- Virudhunagar (217 Kms)

Completed at a cost of Rs. 221 Crores, this electrification project is set to provide enhanced connectivity for the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

2. Virudhunagar – Tenkasi Jn (122 Kms)

With a cost of Rs. 161.13 Crores, this electrification project promises to further improve connectivity in the region.

3. Sengottai – Tenkasi Jn – Tirunelveli- Tiruchendur (141 Km)

Completed at a cost of Rs. 197.38 Crores, this electrification project covers a single-line section, contributing to better operational efficiency and connectivity.

These electrification projects not only provide faster and swifter connectivity but also align with the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
