Mumbai, July 2, 2024 – JSW Steel Limited and JFE Steel Corporation have embarked on a pilot project to implement cutting-edge Cyber-Physical System (CPS) technologies for blast furnace operations at the JSW Steel Vijayanagar Works. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the digital transformation of steel manufacturing, leveraging data science in a cloud-based environment to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.

JSW Steel, one of India’s leading steel manufacturers, is collaborating with Japan’s JFE Steel, which is providing its proprietary CPS technology through a cloud-based platform for the first time in this project. The collaboration is set to deepen with various digital transformation initiatives planned for the future, aimed at further enhancing steel production efficiency.

The pilot project will utilize the Blast Furnace Cyber-Physical System (BF-CPS) technology, which enables visualization and predictive control of blast furnace operations. This technology facilitates the prediction of operational anomalies, such as hot metal temperature fluctuations and channeling issues, allowing for more agile and stable blast furnace performance. Additionally, it is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from blast furnace operations, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Gajraj Singh Rathore, COO – Manufacturing of JSW Steel, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration, stating, “The digital collaboration with JFE to introduce Blast Furnace Cyber-Physical System technologies strengthens our long-standing partnership with JFE Steel. This technological intervention will enable us to enhance the efficiencies of our blast furnace operations while positioning JSW Steel as a leader in data science tech deployment in the global steel sector. Both our organizations will continue to explore new possibilities for tech collaborations in various fields.”

JFE Steel has a history of successful CPS implementations, having introduced the technology across its seven blast furnaces in Japan, achieving highly efficient and stable operations. The BF-CPS technology, which will now be implemented at JSW Steel, represents a significant advancement in operational efficiency and environmental responsibility in steel production.

The collaboration between JSW Steel and JFE dates back to 2009 and includes capital participation and the provision of technical solutions for various applications, such as automotive and electrical steels and environmental measures. This project underscores JFE’s commitment to digital transformation (DX) and its goal of promoting higher productivity and stable operations through advanced technological solutions.
