Surda Mine Reopens, Bringing Jobs and Growth to Jharkhand

The Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines is Shri Satish Chandra Dubey. He officially reopened the Surda Mine in Jharkhand today. The event marks a significant step towards making India self-reliant in copper production. The mine’s operation will create jobs. It will strengthen the local economy. The operation is expected to generate around ₹100 crore in revenue each year.

Local officials attended the inauguration. They included Jharkhand’s Minister of Water Resources, Shri Ramdas Soren. Jamshedpur MP Shri Bidyut Varan Mahato also participated. Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) plans to increase the mine’s production capacity from 0.4 million tonnes per year (mtpa) to 0.9 mtpa in the next seven years. This move will bring direct employment to about 1,100 people and indirect employment to 5,000 others in nearby areas.

The reopening of Kendadih and Rakha mines later this year is expected to generate 2,000 direct jobs. It will create 10,000 indirect jobs, further boosting Jharkhand’s economy.

DRDO Successfully Flight-Tests 4th Generation Very Short Range Air Defence System

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has completed flight tests of its new system. It is the 4th Generation Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS). The tests took place at the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan on October 3rd and 4th, 2024.

Key Highlights of the Test

DRDO carried out three flight-tests of the VSHORADS, targeting high-speed objects. These tests showcased the missile’s ability to intercept targets at maximum range. It also achieved interception at maximum altitude.

The results proved its hit-to-kill capabilities in various challenging situations. The missile demonstrated its effectiveness in different target scenarios, including approaching, receding, and crossing modes.

Indigenous Development of VSHORADS

The VSHORADS is a man-portable air defence system. It was developed indigenously by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI). Other DRDO labs also contributed to the development. The project has been in collaboration with the three branches of India’s Armed Forces from the very beginning.

Two production agencies are now engaged in manufacturing the missile. This is done through the Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) program. The program accelerates the missile’s production and delivery.

A Step Toward Self-Reliance

The successful tests align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ or a self-reliant India. With these trials, the missile system is now prepared for user trials. This process ensures its readiness for deployment by the Armed Forces soon.

Congratulations from Defence Leaders

Rajnath Singh, who is the Raksha Mantri (Defence Minister), praised the DRDO. He also praised the Armed Forces and the defence industry for their efforts in developing this advanced missile system. He highlighted how the new technology will significantly enhance the country’s defence against aerial threats.

Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of DRDO, also congratulated the team, industry partners, and users for the successful flight-tests. He expressed pride in India’s growing technological capabilities.

The success of the VSHORADS flight tests marks a major milestone in India’s defence sector. This indigenous missile system promises to provide the Armed Forces with a modern and reliable shield against aerial threats. It further boosts the nation’s security and self-reliance.

REC Signs Landmark MoU with Rajasthan Government Worth Rs. 3 Lakh Crore

Delhi, 30 September 2024: REC Limited is a Maharatna Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the Ministry of Power. It is also a leading Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC). REC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Rajasthan for a whopping Rs. 3 lakh crore.

The MoU was signed during the “Rising Rajasthan Investors Meet.” It aims to finance key infrastructure projects across the state. These projects encompass both power and non-power sectors over a six-year period ending in 2030.

Under the terms of the MoU, REC will provide Rs. 50,000 crore annually—an increase from the earlier commitment of Rs. 20,000 crore—to fund a variety of critical infrastructure projects in Rajasthan. These projects will span multiple sectors. This includes power, metro systems, highways, and airports. It also covers IT, oil refining, steel, and ports. Additionally, fiber optics, telecom, health, tourism, and agriculture are included.

The agreement was formalized in the presence of Rajasthan’s Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma. Industries and Commerce Minister Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore and Chief Secretary Shri Sudhansh Pant were also present. Shri Rahul Dwivedi, Executive Director of REC, and Shri Debasish Prusty, Secretary to the Government of Rajasthan, exchanged the MoU.

This MoU builds on a previous agreement. It was signed in March 2024 between REC and the Rajasthan government. In this agreement, REC had committed to financing Rs. 20,000 crore annually until 2030. The enhanced commitment reflects the state’s growing infrastructure needs and REC’s dedication to fostering development.

With this partnership, Rajasthan is poised for accelerated growth in sectors vital to the state’s economic expansion. This growth will enhance its infrastructure and contribute to the overall prosperity of the region.

These hotels will be managed under premium brands, currently being finalized with a renowned international operator.

Strategic Expansion and Market Presence

The Whitefield acquisition not only marks SAMHI’s expansion in Bengaluru but also introduces its second “twin hotel complex” model. The first such complex, comprising 336 rooms under the Courtyard by Marriott and Fairfield by Marriott brands, is located in Outer Ring Road (ORR), Bengaluru. The twin-hotel complex strategy enables SAMHI to cater to a broader customer base and enhance operational efficiencies.

Details of the Acquisition

The purchase consideration for this acquisition is estimated at ₹2,050 million (Enterprise Value), subject to adjustments for net current assets, including cash and other working capital components. The acquisition is being fully funded through SAMHI’s internal accruals, demonstrating the company’s robust financial position and commitment to expanding its footprint in high-potential markets. Upon completion, ITHPL will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of SAMHI Hotels Ltd.

The Whitefield property’s strong performance in the Upper Upscale & Upscale segment is expected to significantly boost the same-store growth of SAMHI’s existing portfolio upon completion of the renovation and proposed expansion. New Delhi, October 4, 2024: GAIL (India) Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise, has entered into a landmark partnership with AM Green B.V. (AMG) to drive India’s renewable energy and green chemical initiatives. The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on projects aimed at advancing sustainable energy solutions, focusing on renewable energy generation and the production of eco-friendly chemicals like eMethanol.

This collaboration is set to explore the long-term supply of around 350 kilotonnes per annum (KTA) of carbon dioxide (CO2) generated by GAIL’s gas processing plants to produce eMethanol. The environmentally friendly eMethanol fuel will not only reduce carbon emissions but also promote a circular economy by utilizing CO2 as a feedstock. GAIL has also been granted the option to invest in the proposed eMethanol project, strengthening the partnership and aligning with both companies’ sustainable energy objectives.

Additionally, the MoU lays the groundwork for developing up to 2.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind hybrid renewable energy projects across India. These projects will be combined with Greenko’s Pump Storage Projects to provide round-the-clock power supply for various end users, including the proposed eMethanol production facility. This initiative will enable GAIL and AMG to deliver a reliable source of renewable energy for powering the green chemical sector and reducing the overall carbon footprint of India’s industrial landscape.

Key Objectives of the Partnership

The agreement focuses on two main areas: the production of eMethanol, an alternative fuel produced using captured CO2, and the development of large-scale renewable energy projects to support green chemical manufacturing. This is a significant step towards advancing India’s capabilities in space technology and reducing dependency on foreign imports. They will collaborate on the productionisation of space-grade Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs).

Boost to India’s Space and Defence Sectors

The MoU was signed at SAC Ahmedabad. It is set to enhance the indigenisation of defence and space production in India. The partnership will help reduce the country’s reliance on foreign imports and contribute towards saving precious foreign exchange. This collaboration involves the Navratna Defence PSU, BEL, and ISRO’s SAC. They aim to develop the infrastructure and expertise needed for the large-scale manufacturing of TWTAs within India.

Understanding TWTAs: A Complex Technology

Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs) are sophisticated components. They are used in satellite communication and navigation payloads. They are also utilized in microwave remote sensing radar systems, scientific missions, and inter-spacecraft communication links. The development and manufacturing of TWTAs require multi-disciplinary expertise. They involve the controlled interaction of microwaves with electron beams. This process occurs under ultra-high vacuum conditions.

BEL has already established state-of-the-art facilities for the fabrication and manufacturing of TWTAs. They leverage the technical knowledge provided by SAC, ISRO.

    One major innovation involves using AI and robotics. Imaging technologies are also used for quality checks on textile materials. These technologies are applied to finished products as well. This includes pilot parachutes, cargo parachutes, and crew restraint systems. The goal is to use machine learning to improve the inspection and repair processes.
