Chip giant – AMD opens the world’s largest design center in Bengaluru

AMD new campus in Bengaluru will serve as a center of excellence (CoE) for developing products across high-performance CPUs for data centers and PCs, data center and gaming GPUs, and adaptive system-on-chip (SoCs) and Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for embedded devices.

AMD’s new design center will see massive investments

Semiconductor design firm Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) unveiled its largest global design center in Bengaluru on November 28, a move that is expected to boost India’s ambitions to become a semiconductor manufacturing hub.

AMD Technostar – the new Nerve center for the company

The “AMD Technostar”, a sprawling campus covering 500,000 square feet nestled in the Brookefield area of East Bengaluru, stands as a hub for cutting-edge semiconductor innovation. Dedicated to the forefront of technology, the campus will host a workforce of approximately 3,000 engineers specializing in the intricate realms of semiconductor technology. This spans diverse domains such as 3D stacking, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, showcasing AMD’s commitment to pioneering advancements.

AMD’s $400 million India bet to tap the local talent

This expansive establishment is a pivotal component of AMD’s ambitious $400 million investment strategy unfolding over the next five years. This substantial commitment signifies a profound expansion of the company’s research, development, and engineering endeavors within the Indian landscape. The formal announcement of this strategic investment plan took place during Semicon India 2023 in July, coinciding with a parallel commitment to recruit around 3,000 engineers by the close of 2028.

The Inauguration saw the who’s who of top dignitaries

In a momentous inauguration ceremony, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Railways, Telecommunications, Electronics, and Information Technology, officiated the opening of the facility. He was joined by key AMD executives, including Mark Papermaster, the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer; David Wang, Senior Vice President of GPU Technologies and Engineering; Brian Amick, Senior Vice President of Central Engineering; and Andrej Zdravkovic, the Chief Software Officer and Senior Vice President of GPU Technologies.

Global companies have new-found confidence in India’s talent

Reflecting on the significance of AMD’s substantial investment, Vaishnaw emphasized the alignment with India’s semiconductor program, championed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The establishment of AMD’s largest design center in Bengaluru the fact that there is an unwavering confidence that global companies place in India’s burgeoning talent and design ecosystem for semiconductor technologies

AMD has had a very humble beginning in India since its inception

The Santa Clara-based company, which initiated its Indian operations in 2001 with a handful of employees, has rapidly burgeoned into a workforce of over 7,000 individuals, constituting an impressive 25 percent of AMD’s global personnel. Marking a significant milestone, the addition of the Bengaluru facility elevates AMD’s physical presence to 10 locations across India, including prominent cities such as Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

Strategically positioned, the Bengaluru campus is earmarked as a center of excellence, focusing on the development of a diverse array of products. These encompass high-performance CPUs tailored for data centers and personal computers, cutting-edge data center and gaming GPUs, as well as adaptive System-on-chip (SoCs) and Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) designed for embedded devices.

Importance of new center in Bengaluru

AMD’s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster, underscored the significance of this investment, emphasizing the company’s trust in the engineering prowess inherent in the country. He articulated that the new design center is poised to be a catalyst, propelling technology and product development across AMD’s entire portfolio. The ultimate goal is to fuel the evolution of the next generation of high-performance, adaptive, and artificial intelligence computing solutions that cater to a global clientele.

Facilities at the new campus

The sprawling campus boasts state-of-the-art research and development laboratories covering an expansive 60,000 square feet, complemented by an extensive demo center where visitors can immerse themselves in firsthand experiences of AMD’s diverse product offerings and solutions. 

This strategic development aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to attract major semiconductor players, evident in the country’s push to establish chip fabrication and assembly plants. This initiative is fortified by a substantial $10 billion subsidy program, signaling India’s commitment to fostering a robust semiconductor ecosystem.
