New Delhi, September 02, 2024: In a significant development, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved a new railway line project that will directly connect two major commercial hubs, Mumbai and Indore, through the shortest rail route. The project, which spans 309 kilometers, will involve a total investment of approximately Rs. 18,036 crore and is expected to be completed by 2028-29.

This new line is poised to revolutionize rail connectivity between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, passing through two districts in Maharashtra and four districts in Madhya Pradesh. The project will bring previously unconnected areas into the rail network, thereby improving mobility and efficiency across Indian Railways. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a “New India” and is a critical component of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity.

Key Highlights of the Project

  • Enhanced Connectivity: The new line will include 30 new stations, enhancing connectivity for approximately 1,000 villages and a population of about 30 lakh people. Notably, the project will boost connectivity to the Aspirational District of Barwani in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Economic and Employment Impact: The construction phase is expected to generate direct employment for approximately 102 lakh man-days, contributing significantly to the local economy. Moreover, the project will provide direct connectivity to the Pithampur Auto Cluster, which houses 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries, linking them directly to the gateway port of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and other state ports.
  • Agricultural and Industrial Benefits: The new rail line will facilitate the transportation of commodities such as agricultural products, fertilizers, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, and POL. This will result in an additional freight traffic capacity of about 26 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The project will also support the distribution of millets from Madhya Pradesh and onions from Maharashtra to northern and southern parts of India.
  • Tourism Boost: By providing a shorter route between the western/southwestern parts of the country and Central India, the project is expected to promote tourism, especially to the Ujjain-Indore region, home to the famous Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple.
  • Environmental Impact: As a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, the new rail line will help reduce the country’s logistics costs, cut oil imports by 18 crore liters, and lower CO2 emissions by 138 crore kilograms, which is equivalent to planting 5.5 crore trees.

The approval of this rail project marks a significant step forward in the government’s efforts to enhance connectivity, drive economic growth, and achieve climate goals, all while improving the quality of life for millions of people in the region.
