New Delhi, September 02, 2024: In a bid to enhance the seamless movement of traffic across National Highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a GIS-based software for real-time monitoring of waiting times at toll plazas. Developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI, this innovative software initially targets around 100 toll plazas identified based on congestion feedback received through the 1033 National Highway helpline.
The GIS-based software will provide live updates on the traffic conditions at toll plazas, including the name and location of the plaza, the queue length in meters, total waiting time, and vehicle speed. It is designed to issue congestion alerts and recommend lane distribution when vehicle queues exceed the prescribed limits, ensuring smoother traffic flow.
These toll plazas have been strategically mapped in the software to their respective NHAI field offices across the country, allowing officials to gain valuable insights through comparative traffic condition analysis on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis. The software also provides real-time updates on weather conditions and information about local festivals, enabling NHAI to take pre-emptive measures to manage traffic loads and prevent congestion.
The implementation of this live monitoring and tracking system is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and provide a hassle-free tolling experience for National Highway users across the country. NHAI plans to extend this monitoring service to more toll plazas in a phased manner, further enhancing the efficiency and reliability of toll plaza operations.
