Lava, the Indian mobile phone maker
India’s first desi mobile phone maker, “Lava International”, is launching its latest mobile phone in India with the BharOS mobile operating system. It is interesting to note that the engineers at Lava tested BharOS for over six months, and they found it on par OR better than Android.
As per Lava executives, to gauge the response from the users, there will be 500 Lava phones released in the market that will run on BharOS within the next six months. If the products are well-received by the customers, it will strengthen “Atma Nirbhar” Bharat and bring down the cost of Indian mobile phones even more.
Android OS holds the lion’s share of around 95.2%, followed by Cupertino-based iPhone maker Apple’s iOS (3.93%), Hong Kong-based KaiOS, and Korean Samsung (0.05) each, according to StatCounter – An Analytics company.

BharOS – India’s indigenous mobile operating system
“BharOS,” an acronym for “Bharat Operating System, is a homegrown operating system tailored to meet the diverse needs of the nation’s burgeoning digital landscape. BharOS is government-funded, designed, and developed indigenously in India to provide top-notch “privacy and security” to users. It is a free and open-source operating system to be used in Government and public systems to bring down the dependency on foreign-owned technology.
J and K Operations – Developer of BharOS
The BharOS is a product of J and K operations – an IIT Madras incubated NGO and the Government of India that funded the development of OS. BharOS has various variants, one being the variant used for smart mobile phones. Since all the handheld internet devices like mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and IoT devices connect to the Internet through routers, the NGO is looking at a variant that runs these routers. To prevent handheld devices from getting affected by viruses, the routers that connect to the internet have to catch hold of them (viruses) and remove them first. For that, BharOS has to run on such routers. BharOS for routers can protect laptops, desktops, and other Internet-connected devices from viruses.
Future Prospects and Challenges
As BharOS continues to evolve, its success hinges on overcoming various challenges, including ensuring compatibility with existing hardware and software ecosystems, sustaining developer interest and engagement, and navigating regulatory frameworks and policy considerations. Moreover, fostering widespread adoption and acceptance of BharOS within the Indian market requires concerted efforts in awareness building, capacity building, and strategic partnerships across public and private sectors.
Looking ahead, BharOS holds immense potential to redefine India’s technological landscape, empowering users with a secure, customizable, and indigenous operating system experience. Through continued innovation, collaboration, and community engagement, BharOS exemplifies India’s journey toward technological self-sufficiency and digital empowerment on the global stage.
