Air India and Tata Advanced Systems Invest INR 2300 Crore in Karnataka’s Aerospace and Defence Sector

Landmark Collaboration with the Government of Karnataka

On 19th February 2024, Air India and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka, marking a significant investment of INR 2300 crore in the state’s aerospace and defence sector.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Siddaramaiah, and Hon’ble Industries & Infrastructure Development Minister, Shri M B Patil.

Air India’s Role: Development of MRO Facilities

Air India’s commitment includes the development of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, covering both Narrow-Body and Wide-Body capabilities. This initiative aims to create over 1200 highly skilled employment opportunities and deepen Air India’s presence in Bangalore.

Tata Advanced Systems’ Contribution

Tata Advanced Systems Limited will focus on setting up Aircraft Modification, Conversion, Completion, Defence MRO, Indigenous Gun, Barrel Manufacturing, and R&D Projects in Karnataka. The investment is expected to generate over 450 highly skilled job opportunities in the state.

Strategic Partnership with Bangalore International Airport Limited

The agreement is a step towards forging a deeper partnership between Bangalore International Airport Limited and Air India. This collaboration aims to enhance Karnataka’s aerospace ecosystem and create around 1600 direct jobs, with over 25,000 indirect job opportunities expected.

Leaders’ Perspectives

Honorable Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the collaboration’s positive impact on Karnataka’s aerospace industry and job creation. Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, Shri. MB Patil, emphasized the strategic alliance’s significance for the state’s economic growth.

Mr. Sukaran Singh, CEO of TASL, expressed pleasure in announcing a long-term partnership, marking a significant stride in advancing India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing sector.

BLR Airport’s CEO on Transformative Collaboration

Mr. Hari Marar, MD & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited, announced the transformative collaboration, solidifying Bengaluru’s status as an aviation hub.

Future Prospects: Elevating India’s Aviation Hub

The partnership aims to propel the aerospace industry, foster innovation, and contribute to economic growth. With BLR Airport emerging as a primary hub, the collaboration aligns with the Civil Aviation Ministry’s vision, potentially elevating India into a dynamic aviation hub.

This initiative is expected to generate up to 25,000 indirect job opportunities, stimulate economic activity, and fortify the supply chain for over 200 SMEs in the state.
