What is a Sponge Iron plant?
A sponge iron plant, also known as a direct-reduced iron (DRI) plant, is a facility where iron ore is converted into a metallic iron product known as sponge iron. This process is called direct reduction because it does not involve the use of coke or coal, which are typically used in traditional iron-making processes such as blast furnaces.
Sponge iron has several applications, including as a raw material in electric arc furnaces (EAFs) for steelmaking, as well as in the production of iron-based powders used in industries like automotive and construction.
