The Ministry of Coal, in a landmark move, has initiated India’s first ever pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in the Kasta coal block, located in Jamtara District, Jharkhand.
This pioneering project, undertaken by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), aims to revolutionise the coal industry by converting coal into valuable gases like methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide through in-situ gasification.
These gases will be used for producing synthetic natural gas, fuels, fertilizers, explosives, and other industrial products.

Innovative Approach to Coal Utilization
The UCG process presents a significant advancement in accessing coal resources that are otherwise uneconomical to mine using traditional methods. By adopting this innovative technology, India positions itself as a leader in coal gasification, promising substantial benefits for the country’s energy sector.
Comprehensive Policy and Collaborative Efforts
In December 2015, the Ministry of Coal approved a detailed policy framework for UCG in coal and lignite-bearing areas. Following this policy, the Kasta coal block was chosen to implement UCG technology adapted to Indian geo-mining conditions.
The project, managed by ECL in collaboration with CMPDI Ranchi and Canadian firm Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. (EETI), will span two years and be executed in two phases.

Phased Project Execution
The first phase, which began on June 22, 2024, involves preparing a Technical Feasibility Report through borehole drilling and core testing. The second phase will focus on pilot-scale coal gasification.
This ambitious research and development (R&D) project, funded by the Coal India Limited (CIL) R&D Board, exemplifies the collaborative efforts of Eastern Coalfields Ltd and Ergo Exergy as sub-implementing agencies.

Potential Impact on India’s Energy Sector
The successful execution of this pilot project is expected to create transformative opportunities for India’s energy sector. It will demonstrate the sustainable and efficient use of the country’s coal resources, enhancing energy security and promoting sustainable development.
The Ministry of Coal is committed to supporting this pioneering initiative and looks forward to its positive impact on India’s energy landscape.
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
This strategic initiative led by ECL marks a significant advancement in coal gasification technology. As the pilot project progresses, it aims to set new standards in coal resource utilization, contributing to India’s journey towards energy self-reliance. The Ministry remains dedicated to fostering innovation and efficiency in the coal sector, paving the way for a resilient and environmentally sustainable energy future for the nation.
