New Delhi, 21 June 2024 – The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has taken a significant step towards bolstering the safety and performance of electric vehicles (EVs) by introducing two new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024. These standards are meticulously crafted to ensure that the powertrains of EVs, spanning categories L, M, and N, adhere to rigorous safety criteria, thereby enhancing overall vehicle safety. The standards also focus on the critical aspect of battery performance, emphasizing both power and security to safeguard users.
New Standards for Electric Vehicles
IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024 are the latest additions to the BIS’s efforts to create a safer electric mobility ecosystem. These standards set comprehensive guidelines for the powertrain systems of electric vehicles, ensuring they meet stringent safety protocols and performance metrics. The guidelines are designed to mitigate risks associated with powertrain malfunctions, thereby protecting passengers and enhancing the reliability of EVs.
Moreover, the standards address the performance and safety of EV batteries, a vital component for the effective functioning of electric vehicles. The focus is on ensuring that these batteries are not only powerful but also secure, minimizing potential hazards such as overheating, short-circuits, and other battery-related issues.
Inclusion of E-Rickshaws and E-Karts
Recognizing the burgeoning popularity of electric mobility beyond traditional cars and trucks, BIS has also introduced IS 18294: 2023, a standard specifically for e-rickshaws and e-karts. These electric vehicles are increasingly common on Indian roads, providing a sustainable and cost-effective mode of transportation. The new standard encompasses various safety and functionality parameters, including construction and operational aspects, ensuring the well-being of both drivers and passengers.
Comprehensive Coverage of Electric Mobility
With the introduction of these new standards, BIS now oversees a total of 30 Indian Standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their associated systems, including charging infrastructure. These standards play a pivotal role in guiding the transition to a more sustainable transportation framework by setting benchmarks for safety, efficiency, and environmental performance.
