India’s Rise in Cyber security Excellence

India has reached a major milestone by achieving Tier 1 status in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024. The report, published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), ranks India among the top-performing nations.

India achieved a remarkable score of 98.49 out of 100. This recognition positions India as a role model for countries globally in cybersecurity practices.

Government’s Commitment to Cyber security

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) served as the nodal agency responsible for India’s representation in the GCI 2024. Shri Jyotiraditya M Scindia, the Minister of Communications, expressed his pride in this achievement.

He stated that it reflects India’s “unwavering commitment to cybersecurity.” It also highlights the significant growth in the nation’s telecom sector.

How the GCI 2024 Measures Cyber security

The GCI 2024 evaluated countries based on five pillars: legal frameworks, technical measures, organizational practices, capacity development, and international cooperation. The assessment involved a comprehensive review of cybersecurity strategies. It spanned 83 questions that covered 20 indicators, 64 sub-indicators, and 28 micro-indicators.

India’s Comprehensive Cyber security Framework

India’s strong performance is a result of various government-led initiatives aimed at building cyber resilience. The legal institutions in India are well-equipped to combat cybercrime and protect the country’s digital infrastructure.

Additionally, Sectoral Computer Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) provide technical support across various sectors. They ensure the country is prepared to handle cyber threats.

Education has been a cornerstone of India’s cybersecurity strategy. The government has launched several awareness campaigns and integrated cybersecurity into school curricula to promote secure online practices.
