Integrated Aquaparks: In a move to enhance the fisheries sector, Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the establishment of five integrated aquaparks during the presentation of the Interim Budget 2024-25 in Parliament.
Recognizing the significance of supporting fishermen, the Minister highlighted the Government’s initiative in setting up a separate Department for Fisheries, resulting in a doubling of both inland and aquaculture production since its inception. Additionally, seafood exports have doubled since 2013-14.

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to be Strengthened
Sitharaman outlined plans to intensify the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with the aim of achieving several objectives. These include enhancing aquaculture productivity, doubling exports to ₹1 lakh crore, and generating 55 lakh employment opportunities in the near future.
Launching Blue Economy 2.0 Scheme
The Minister introduced a new scheme, Blue Economy 2.0, aimed at promoting climate-resilient activities. This scheme will focus on restoration and adaptation measures, as well as coastal aquaculture and mariculture, adopting an integrated and multi-sectoral approach.

Comprehensive Programme for Dairy Farmers
In her address, Sitharaman also unveiled plans for a comprehensive programme to support dairy farmers. Emphasizing the need to address challenges such as foot and mouth disease, she highlighted India’s position as the world’s largest milk producer but with relatively low productivity in terms of milch animals.
The programme will leverage the success of existing schemes such as the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, National Livestock Mission, and Infrastructure Development Funds for dairy processing and animal husbandry.
