New Delhi, August 21, 2024 – In a landmark move towards expanding its global presence, BEML Ltd., India’s premier rolling stock manufacturer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SMH Rail Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia’s largest rolling stock manufacturer. This historic collaboration was formalized during an event in Delhi, witnessed by Malaysia’s Minister of International Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul B. Tengku Abdul Aziz.

This strategic alliance between BEML Ltd. and SMH Rail represents a significant milestone in the relationship between India and Malaysia, focusing on meeting the growing global demand for advanced rail and metro rolling stock. The partnership aims to leverage the strengths of both companies to cater to markets in Malaysia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
Collaboration Focus Areas
The MoU outlines the joint efforts of BEML and SMH Rail in several critical areas, including marketing, manufacturing, and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services. The partnership will facilitate the joint design, engineering, manufacturing, and integration of rolling stock tailored to specific client requirements. Additionally, both companies will engage in sourcing rolling stock aggregates and subsystems, formulating competitive strategies, and mutually exchanging technology.

This MoU is part of BEML’s ongoing efforts to enhance its global footprint and cater to the increasing demand for reliable and innovative rail and metro solutions worldwide. With over six decades of experience, BEML has established itself as a trusted partner in the global market, exporting to over 72 countries.
BEML is a leading Metro car manufacturer in India, known for being the first company in the country to produce all-steel integral passenger rail coaches and other rolling stock for Indian Railways. The company’s Rail Coach Factory in Bangalore, established in 1948, was the first of its kind in India, having manufactured and supplied over 18,000 mainline passenger coaches and more than 900 Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) for Indian Railways.
BEML has also pioneered the manufacture of stainless-steel metro cars since 2002 and was the first to indigenously design and produce driverless metro cars in India. As of July 2024, BEML has delivered over 2,000 metro coaches to various Indian Metro Corporations, including Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Mumbai.
