Successful Production of Hydrogen Pipes

Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have become the first Indian companies to produce Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipes. These pipes are specifically designed for the transportation of pure hydrogen gas.

This marks a significant step towards advancing clean energy solutions.

Partnership and Development

The journey began in 2022. Tata Steel and Welspun Corp signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop hydrogen-compliant API X65 H grade pipes.

Their collaboration has now resulted in the successful creation of pipes. These pipes have passed critical sour service and fracture qualification tests. They were tested under high pressure at RINA, Italy.

Contributions to Green Energy

This achievement aligns with the Government of India’s green hydrogen policy. Tata Steel and Welspun Corp’s partnership aims to support the widespread adoption of green hydrogen. This contributes to a greener and more sustainable future.

Prabhat Kumar, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at Tata Steel, emphasized the importance of this milestone. He mentioned it is crucial in promoting clean energy solutions. He also stressed building robust infrastructure for hydrogen transportation.

Future-Ready Initiatives

Vipul Mathur, Managing Director & CEO of Welspun Corp, highlighted their commitment to expanding their product portfolio. He also emphasized promoting the use of green hydrogen. This effort is part of their broader strategy to embed ESG drivers. It also supports the Government’s vision for a net-zero economy by 2070.

Tata Steel continues to lead in industrial decarbonisation with several initiatives. These include trials of hydrogen gas injection in blast furnaces. They also encompass carbon capture and utilisation and sustainable supply chain development.
