SpiceJet, a prominent airline in India, has reached a settlement agreement with Export Development Canada (EDC) to resolve liabilities amounting to $90.8 million (INR 755 crore). This significant development marks a major breakthrough in SpiceJet’s financial restructuring efforts, positioning the airline for long-term stability and growth.
The settlement agreement is expected to generate savings of $68.3 million (INR 567 crore) for SpiceJet, significantly alleviating its financial burden and strengthening its balance sheet. As part of the settlement, SpiceJet will acquire complete ownership of 13 Q400 aircraft previously financed by EDC. This transfer of ownership will bolster SpiceJet’s operational capabilities and fleet management.
Transfer of Q400 planes to SpiceJet
With the ownership transfer of the Q400 planes, SpiceJet plans to refurbish and reintroduce these aircraft into service. This initiative will enable the airline to expand its operations on regional and UDAN routes, enhancing connectivity across India.
Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet, expressed gratitude to EDC for their cooperation and progressive approach in reaching the settlement agreement. He highlighted the significance of this milestone in strengthening SpiceJet’s position for long-term success.
The liabilities resolved in the settlement agreement originated from a loan acquired by SpiceJet in 2011 for the procurement of 15 aircraft. With this settlement, SpiceJet will be liberated from the obligation of regular monthly rentals for the grounded Q400 aircraft.
The settlement agreement with EDC represents a pivotal step forward for SpiceJet, reaffirming its resilience and commitment to overcoming financial challenges. By fortifying its balance sheet and expanding its operational capabilities, SpiceJet aims to emerge as a stronger player in the Indian aviation industry.
