MoU Signing for Road Safety Enhancement
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi.
This collaboration, involving a premier technical university established by the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT), is set to revolutionize road safety by utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the availability and condition of road signs on National Highways.
Comprehensive Survey and Data Collection
As part of the agreement, IIIT Delhi will conduct extensive surveys to collect imagery and related data on the availability and condition of road signage along selected stretches of National Highways.
This ambitious project aims to cover approximately 25,000 km of highway. The data collected will undergo rigorous processing through AI, enabling accurate identification and classification of road signs.
The survey report will provide a geo-stamped inventory of existing road signs, categorize their condition, and include other essential ancillary data.
Gap Analysis for Enhanced Safety
In addition to data collection, IIIT Delhi will perform a comprehensive gap analysis. This study will compare the survey findings against the requirements outlined in the approved road sign plans of respective contract agreements.
It will also consider the latest codal provisions relevant to high-speed corridors to ensure that the road signs meet the enhanced safety requirements.
Harnessing AI and GIS for Innovation
By harnessing the potential of AI and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), NHAI aims to significantly enhance road safety for all National Highway users.
This initiative underscores NHAI’s commitment to embracing innovation and adopting advanced technologies to ensure safer travel on India’s extensive highway network.
This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards utilizing advanced technological solutions to address road safety challenges, promising safer journeys for millions of commuters across the country.
