New Development for Varanasi Airport Approved by Cabinet

Major Expansion Plan

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a significant development project for Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will undertake this project, which includes the construction of a new terminal building, apron extension, runway extension, and a parallel taxi track along with other related works.

Increased Passenger Capacity

The project is estimated to cost Rs. 2869.65 Crore and aims to increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from the current 3.9 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 9.9 MPPA.

The new terminal building, covering an area of 75,000 square meters, will be able to handle 6 million passengers annually and 5000 passengers during peak hours. The design of the terminal will reflect the rich cultural heritage of Varanasi.

Infrastructure Enhancements

As part of the development, the airport’s runway will be extended to 4075 meters in length and 45 meters in width. Additionally, a new apron will be constructed to accommodate 20 aircraft. These enhancements will support the increased passenger capacity and improve the overall efficiency of the airport.

Focus on Sustainability

The development project aims to make Varanasi airport a green airport, prioritizing environmental sustainability. Measures will include energy optimization, waste recycling, carbon footprint reduction, the use of solar energy, and maximizing natural daylight. These initiatives will be integrated throughout the planning, development, and operational stages of the project.

This comprehensive development plan for Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is expected to significantly boost the region’s connectivity and support its economic growth while preserving its cultural essence and promoting sustainability.
