In a significant development that will unlock the potential of the Mysuru airspace, it has been decided to lay the foundation stone for the expansion of Mysuru Airport in January 2024. This decision was discussed during the Airport Advisory Committee meeting chaired by Mysuru MP Pratap Simha. The attendees included MLA Chamundeshwari, officials from the district administration and the Airport Authority of India (AAI).
Mysuru Airport Land Acquisition Status & Proposed Works
Out of the total 240 acres required for the first phase, 160 acres of land have already been acquired. The completion of the pending land acquisition is expected soon. In this initial phase, the runway will undergo expansion from its current dimensions of 1740 X 30 meters to 2750 X 45 meters to accommodate A320 type flights. Following this, further expansion of the runway to 3500 meters will be based on demand.
The proposal to acquire additional 91 acres of land to expand the airport runway to international standards is pending before the State Government.
Underpass Proposal for Highway Dropped
Initially, there was a plan to construct an underpass beneath the extended runway to facilitate NH 766 national highway users, as it currently intersects with the proposed runway extension path. However, this plan was abandoned due to security concerns and cost considerations. Instead, the present NH 766 will be rerouted around the expanded runway, resulting in an additional 7-8 kilometers of highway.
