Historical Significance of Kundapura
The town, renowned for its cultural heritage, derives its name from the Kundeshvara temple, built by Kundavarma of the Alupa dynasty during the 10th-11th century. Historically, Kundapura served as the center of power for the Vijayanagara Dynasty and later came under the control of the Rajas of Baindoor, who established it as their principal port town. The town has seen various rulers, including the Portuguese in the 16th century, and later became a part of the kingdom established by Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan. Kundapura later was under British rule.
Situated on the western coast of Karnataka, Kundapura is flanked by rivers on two sides, with backwaters and the Arabian Sea on the third. The town is known for its unique Kannada dialect and culinary delights.
