The Indian Navy has added a new survey ship, Nirdeshak, to its fleet on October 8, 2024. Built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, this is the second of four planned Survey Vessels. These ships are designed to map coastal areas. They will also map underwater environments. This mapping will help gather important data for both defense and civil purposes.
Nirdeshak, weighing about 3,400 tons and 110 meters long, is equipped with advanced tools like underwater drones and sonar systems. It will help the Navy identify safe routes for ships and study the ocean floor. The first ship of the series, INS Sandhayak, was commissioned earlier in February 2024.
The ship’s construction reflects India’s push towards self-reliance, with over 80% of its parts made in India. This project also highlights the efforts of various Indian companies and industries working together to boost the country’s naval strength.
