In a significant boost for India’s maritime infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Tuticorin International Container Terminal. This terminal is located in Tamil Nadu. Modi’s address was delivered via a video message. The address underscored the strategic importance of this new terminal. It enhances India’s position as a major player in global trade.

Tuticorin Terminal: A Major Milestone

The inauguration of the Tuticorin International Container Terminal marks a pivotal moment in India’s maritime history. Prime Minister Modi described the terminal as the “new star of India’s marine infrastructure.” He emphasized its critical role in expanding the capacity of the V.O. Chidambaranar Port.

The terminal has a deep draft of over 14 meters. It also has a berth extending more than 300 meters. The terminal is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs. It will also conserve foreign exchange for India.

Tamil Nadu: A Maritime Trade Hub

Modi highlighted Tamil Nadu’s growing prominence as a key maritime trade hub. “With three major ports and seventeen non-major ports, Tamil Nadu has become a major hub for maritime trade,” he noted.

This expansion of port facilities is part of a larger effort to enhance India’s maritime capabilities. The effort includes a Rs 7,000 crore investment in an Outer Harbour Container Terminal.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

The Prime Minister also emphasized India’s commitment to sustainable development. The V.O.C. Port is set to be a Green Hydrogen hub. It will also be a central port for offshore wind energy. This showcases India’s dedication to tackling climate change. Modi praised the innovative and collaborative approach that has driven this project forward.

According to Modi, the new terminal is not just an infrastructure upgrade but a foundational element in India’s economic growth.
