ABB Robotics’ PixelPaint technology has been chosen by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M), a leading SUV manufacturer in India, to enhance the personalization options for its new line of electric vehicles (EVs). The selection marks a significant milestone as M&M becomes the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to implement PixelPaint technology for the precise painting of contrasting roofs and pillars on their vehicles. Serial production using this innovative technology is set to begin in 2025.

PixelPaint, developed by ABB, is renowned for its precision and efficiency in applying paint to vehicle surfaces. The technology operates similarly to an inkjet printer, utilizing a paint head equipped with over 1,000 tiny nozzles that are individually controlled. These nozzles, when mounted on an ABB robot like the IRB 5500 paint series, allow for the accurate application of both large areas and fine details without interrupting the production line or requiring manual intervention. The system’s integration with ABB’s 3D vision system and RobotStudio® planning and programming software ensures that paint is applied precisely where needed, with no overspray or waste, thus eliminating the need for labor-intensive masking and reducing the number of repeat trips through the paint shop.

Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line, highlighted the advantages of this technology, stating, “Our revolutionary PixelPaint technology can apply large areas of uniform color as well as the tiniest details with complete accuracy, without delaying the production line or the need for manual intervention.” The technology enables Mahindra’s paint shop to perform complex painting operations, such as contrasting roof and pillar treatments, in a fully automated manner. This deployment is expected to enhance the finish quality of Mahindra’s new EV line and position it firmly within the luxury segment.

In addition to PixelPaint, Mahindra’s deployment includes 42 robots from the IRB 5500 family. These robots will autonomously handle tasks such as interior painting and sealing, further ensuring precision and efficiency. The use of ABB’s digitally-enabled paint atomizers, such as the RB1000i, will also improve transfer efficiency by 10% and reduce paint waste by over 30%, ensuring a more sustainable operation with less environmental impact.

ABB’s PixelPaint technology aligns with the growing demand for vehicle personalization, offering a transformative solution that combines quality, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. By eliminating the need for manual masking and significantly reducing paint waste, ABB’s technology not only meets but exceeds the high standards required for premium vehicle finishes.
