Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has achieved a significant milestone. It is the first airport in Asia to receive the prestigious Airports Council International’s (ACI) Level 5 accreditation. This significant achievement, effective from May 5, 2024, recognizes BLR Airport’s success in drastically reducing its carbon footprint.
The airport has achieved a 95.6% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, marking the highest emission reduction by any Indian airport. Remarkably, BLR Airport reached this milestone seven years ahead of its initial 2030 target.
Commitment to Sustainability
BLR Airport’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its comprehensive approach to reducing emissions. The airport has transitioned entirely to renewable electricity and introduced several initiatives focused on sustainable mobility and green infrastructure. To offset the remaining emissions, BLR Airport has procured ACI-approved carbon units from verified carbon removal projects. Moving forward, the airport plans to offset residual emissions through in-house green projects, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future.
Vision for a Greener Future
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) Managing Director and CEO, Hari Marar, expressed pride in the airport’s achievements. “We are delighted to be the first airport in Asia to attain ACI’s Level 5 accreditation. We lead the way with the highest emission elimination by an Indian airport,” Marar said.
He emphasized that this accomplishment underscores BLR Airport’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and sets a new standard for the industry.
Long-Term Goals Beyond 2050
BLR Airport’s sustainability efforts extend beyond immediate goals. The airport is dedicated to achieving Net Zero GHG emissions by 2050. This includes Scope 3 emissions. It aligns with the rigorous standards of ACI’s carbon accreditation program.
This long-term commitment is part of the airport’s broader sustainability vision. This vision is centered on driving economic, social, and environmental transformation.
Supporting Global Sustainability Goals
BLR Airport’s sustainability framework is guided by six key pillars. These include Water Stewardship, Net Zero Carbon Emission, and Sustainable Mobility.
These efforts align with 11 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). This demonstrates the airport’s role in contributing to global sustainability efforts.
