New Delhi, March 5, 2025: Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), a leading financial institution under the Ministry of Railways, has been awarded the prestigious Navratna status by the Government of India. This recognition underscores its vital role in funding Indian Railways’ infrastructure expansion and modernization.
Established in 1986, IRFC has evolved into a major non-banking financial company (NBFC), securing its position as the third-largest government NBFC in India. As of March 31, 2024, IRFC reported a revenue of ₹26,600 crore and a profit after tax exceeding ₹6,400 crore. The company plays a crucial role in funding nearly 80% of Indian Railways’ rolling stock.
IRFC has also made significant strides in the financial markets. Since its listing on stock exchanges in January 2021 at an IPO price of ₹26, its stock has surged to around ₹140. With a market capitalization of over ₹2 lakh crore, an asset under management (AUM) of ₹4.61 lakh crore, and a net worth of ₹52,000 crore, IRFC continues to be a key player in India’s infrastructure financing.

This recognition further motivates us to expand our capabilities and contribute to India’s economic growth.”
Looking ahead, IRFC is diversifying its investments beyond railway asset financing, entering sectors such as power, coal, telecom, and warehousing. It has recently secured ₹700 crore funding for 20 BOBR rakes for NTPC and was the lowest bidder to finance a ₹3,190 crore loan for Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL). Additionally, IRFC will finance ₹7,500 crore for NTPC Renewable Energy Limited.
With India aiming to become a $10 trillion economy, IRFC’s role in railway infrastructure financing is set to grow even further. The company remains committed to cost-effective financing solutions, supporting projects that enhance passenger and freight capacity.
