Indian engineers at Renault Nissan Engineering Centre contribute significantly to the global automotive platform development

Renault Nissan Technology Business Centre India (RNTBCI), serving as the premier global R&D hub of the Renault Nissan Alliance within the nation, spearheads nearly 50% of its operations for international endeavors.

RNTBCI is a company with a strong workforce of over 10,000 engineers. About 6,000 engineers are dedicated to core engineering tasks while over 3,000 specialize in crafting advanced software and connectivity solutions for global projects. It has the third-largest automotive development stronghold in the country. The company’s endeavors range from fundamental product development to sophisticated software innovations.

The Contributions of RNTBCI to Global Projects

With a 51:49 joint venture between Renault and Nissan, RNTBCI emerges as the foremost R&D center for French and Japanese automotive giants beyond their native shores.

During a recent Renault Nissan Alliance event held at the Oragadam factory, the managing director of RNTBCI, Debashis Neogi emphasized India Center’s significance in fostering high value creation and innovation. Neogi highlighted India’s pivotal role in accelerating vehicle development through leveraging local resources and digital tools, delivering comprehensive solutions from conceptualization to production via a blend of virtual and physical methodologies.

RNTBCI has already made substantial contributions to key GLOBAL PROJECTS for Renault and Nissan, including the Renault 5, Renault Scenic, Renault Spring, Nissan X-Trail, and advancements in electrified powertrains such as the Nissan E-Note (powered by E-Power) and Nissan Leaf.

The RNTBCI has conceptualized, designed, and developed 13 models

For the past fifteen years, the center has showcased its expertise by conceptualizing, engineering, and successfully launching over 13 models that are specifically designed for the Indian market. Building on this legacy, the company is now developing six additional models, including two SUVs and an electric vehicle for both Renault and Nissan brands in India.

The kind of work that happens at RNTBCI

The breadth of operations at RNTBCI encompasses a wide spectrum of disciplines, including research and advanced engineering, vehicle development, simulation and testing, software and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), powertrain engineering, chassis engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, and production engineering.

When it comes to innovations, the center harnesses cutting-edge technologies such as data science, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), blockchain, and mobile technology. These technologies are leveraged to streamline product lifecycle management, enhance connected car services, optimize salesforce and SAP integration, and implement full-stack solutions ensuring seamless connectivity and operations across plants.

Moreover, the Global Business Services arm, comprising over 760 skilled engineers, delivers bespoke solutions spanning accounting, finance, costing, digital finance operations, fixed marketing investment, customs management, HR services, and finance support functions.

The RNTBCI base near Chennai manages the entire backend accounting operations for the Renault group, underscoring its significance as a cornerstone of operational excellence within the Renault Nissan Alliance.

RNTBCI collaborates with deep-tech startups

To realize its forward-looking vision, the company plans to increase the involvement of deep tech startups, establish strategic partnerships with academia to recruit young and talented engineers, and promote greater gender diversity to drive global innovation.

India has the world’s third-largest number of startups, with around 3000 in the deep tech sector. RNTBCI supports startups during their incubation phase and uses their specialized services.

Women empowerment

On the diversity front, there has been a notable increase in the proportion of female employees, rising from 11% to 23% in recent years. Neogi underscores the company’s commitment to further elevate this figure to 50% within the next decade, emphasizing a steadfast dedication to diversity and inclusion.

Talent development

To cultivate a skilled talent pool, Renault Nissan has forged partnerships with several institutes and universities in and around Chennai, tailoring dedicated courses in the automotive domain to meet industry demands.

Academia plays a pivotal role in shaping our talent pipeline. RTNBCI grooms aspiring engineers for industry readiness through internships and rigorous training programs. The company’s newly launched M Tech in Mobility is designed to equip talents with the necessary skills to thrive in the automotive sector.

“We have established partnerships with esteemed institutions such as Amrita, VIT, and SRM, and ongoing collaboration with IIT Madras Research Park, particularly in advanced battery chemistry. Our commitment to internal and external innovation remains unwavering as we seek to capitalize on future opportunities for growth,” Neogi concluded, underscoring the company’s proactive stance toward innovation and talent development.
